Regional Premier South West News - Yeovil Intermediate rise to the challenge - 20 May 2017 - Women's Football News

Yeovil Town Intermediate have won the Premier Division of the South West Women's League at the first attempt, following promotion at the end of last season.

Yeovil started the season well by winning all of their opening three matches before losing narrowly to Bishop's Lydeard in what would be their only defeat of the season. They spent much of the campaign chasing after leaders Marine Academy Plymouth but managed to make up the ground and after drawing 2-2 with their main rivals in March, Yeovil went on to sew up the title by winning their last match against Poole Town.

"This season has been a great challenge for the squad," manager Wes Gullin told Women's Soccer Scene. "There are some fantastic clubs in this division that have been playing at this level for several years and it's been a privilege for me and my assistant manager Jemma Tewkesbury to lead the team to another title.

"When you look at the great work that is being done by Julie Bowker at Bishops Lydeard Ladies, or by Vicki Fannon at Torquay United, it's easy to see why it's such a tough division. We have always been able to have a great mix of experience and promising young talent in this squad, and it's something myself and Jemma are keen to see continue."

The team is captained by Hannah Eglon and assistant manager Jemma Tewkesbury set a great example on the pitch by scoring an impressive 31 goals on their way to the title.

"Being able to win the title at home against Poole Town Ladies was a great occasion, as they are a side that can compete with anyone in the division," added Gullin. "Four goals from Jemma Tewkesbury and a brilliant penalty from vice captain Naomi Binding gave us the points, and it was a really special moment for us to celebrate on what could be our last game played at Somerton Sports Ground.

"Now our attentions turn to the Pat Sowden Cup Final against Marine Academy Plymouth on 21st May, which we expect to be a really tough game. We will get ourselves prepared for that game, and then focus on preparing to enter the FA Women's Premier League next season."

Yeovil Town Intermediate squad: Hannah Eglon, Naomi Binding, Lucie Nurse, Lindsay Rogers, Rebecca Wakley, Charlie Lilley, Georgia Mann, Georgia Coward, Emma Brazil, Amy Anderson, Eva Smith, Laura Wensley, Terri Trowbridge, Imogen Fisher, Colette Martin, Poppy Smith, Phoebe Oreshko, Jodi Cornwall, Olivia Watts, Lucy Pitman, Jemma Tewkesbury.
