Great Britain squad heading for Taipei
 Women's Football Events News - 13 Jul 2017

A squad of 20 players from 14 universities has been selected to represent Team GBR at this year's World University Games in Chinese Taipei, 19 - 30th August.

Held biennially in major cities across the globe, the World University Games (WUGS) sees athletes come together to compete across 22 sports with the Summer Universiade the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympics.

Following rigorous selection trials, the team including 15 English, three Welsh and two Scottish players, will travel to Hong Kong in early August for a holding camp before competing in Pool D of the thirteen team tournament against Russia and South Africa.

Last time Team GBR entered a women's football team was the 2013 Games in Kazan, where the team won the tournament after beating Mexico 6-2 in the gold medal match.

Known for being a breeding ground of future women's football stars, the 2013 team included the likes of three current Lionesses - Chelsea Ladies' Fran Kirby and Manchester City's Izzy Christensen and Demi Stokes.

The 2017 edition of Team GBR's women's football team includes many emerging stars.

The women's football team will join almost 10,000 participants from over 170 countries expected to compete at the Games - with the overall Great Britain delegation to reach over 160.

To be eligible, athletes must also be studying towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institute - or have finished study in the year preceding the Games.
