Palace setting early pace
 Women's Football WPL South News - 29 Aug 2017

A 4-2 victory away to Chichester City means that Crystal Palace are the early pacemakers in the Southern Division.

Ciara Sherwood, Nikita Whinnett, Ellie Bailes and Gemma Bryan all scored a goal apiece for Palace, with Chichester replying through Gemma Simmonds and Charley Wilson-Blakely.

Charlton Athletic also built on an opening day victory with another win, 2-1 at Gillingham. The Addicks led at the break through a goal on the half hour from Charlotte Lee and although Kallie Balfour brought the Gills level after the restart, Charley Clifford struck midway through the second half to hand Charlton the points.

Portsmouth ensured they joined Crystal Palace and Charlton on six points as they won 2-1 away to Coventry Utd. Pompey were two up inside the opening twelve minutes with goals from Samantha Quayle and Rachel Panting and although Stephanie Smith pulled one back for the home side, it was Portsmouth who recorded their second straight win to complete the early top three.

C & K Basildon are the division's other unbeaten team, following their 1-1 draw against Lewes. The first half was goalless but early in the second half, Angela Addison put C & K in front. They remained in front until the hour mark, when Amy Taylor scored to earn the Rookettes a share of the spoils and their first point of the season.

West Ham Utd also claimed their first points as they edged out Cardiff City Ladies by the odd goal in seven. Paige Anderson-James was on target twice, including a late winner, to add to further strikes from Amber Stobbs and Molly Peters whilst Cardiff replied through a Cori Williams brace and Chloe O'Connor.

Queen's Park Rangers were another team to get off the mark with a 2-0 victory over Swindon Town, courtesy of Elly Maggs who scored a goal in each half.
