Winchester City Flyers 0 Southampton Women 7
Southampton Women booked a place in the First Round of the SSE Women's FA Cup with a dominant performance to beat Winchester City Flyers by seven goals to nil at Winchester City FC.
Bringing a 100 per cent FAWPL South West Division One record into this match, Southampton simply had too many attacking options for their Southern Region Premier Division hosts. Despite the harsh scoreline, Flyers were also able to create several chances of their own and also played a good brand of passing football to entertain the sizeable crowd.
Winchester made a bright start and had the first attempt on goal through Bryony Morrell but Jane Yeates opened the scoring on the quarter hour, finishing at the second attempt after Lauren Higgs had saved her initial effort. Higgs saved well from a Kirsty Bell 25-yard free kick on 24 minutes. turning the shot wide at full stretch.
Flyers' best move of the match nearly brought an equaliser on 34 minutes. A series of passes cut open the Southampton defence and put Morrell through on goal but Millie Peake got down well low to her left to save. Higgs was quick off her line to deny Sheree Bell-Jack on 38 minutes but was beaten when the same player delivered a perfect corner soon after for Natasha Angel to head into the top corner.
Lauren Pearce prevented a Southampton third by clearing after Higgs had saved from Laura Vokes but the visitors were starting to dominate. On the restart, the Winchester keeper made three more fine stops. twice from Bell-Jack and then from sub Liv Channon. Sadly, the keeper dislocated a finger in making the last save and had to leave the field, replaced by skipper Charlotte Warhurst who vacated her central defensive post and soon made a good save to deny Bell-Jack.
Another Southampton sub, Chelsie Hay scored the third on 62 minutes, just after Beth Norman had gone close for Flyers. Bell added the fourth with a trademark long range effort on 71 minutes. Manu Naprta scored two minutes later from a narrow angle after rounding the keeper as the visitors turned on the style. Nat Bavister. who was outstanding all game down the left side, forced a headed own goal for the sixth with a dangerous cross.
Norman was denied a deserved consolation by another smart save by Peake late on and Southampton had a final flourish when Naprta set up Bell-Jack to score the goal her efforts deserved with the last kick of the game.
Southampton Women looked an excellent unit with skill and strength all over the pitch. Their perfect record will be put to the test soon when they play Portsmouth in the FAWPL League Cup and they will travel to Larkhall Athletic in the next round.
