Blackburn Rovers have started the task of catching up all their games in hand and two important wins in three days have given their Northern Division title aspirations a huge boost.
On Sunday they ran out 6-2 winners over Derby County, courtesy of doubles from Lagan Makin and Lynda Shepherd, with Natasha Flint and Jess Holbrook also on target. Shannon Weston and Kirsty Allen both netted in reply for Derby.
Rovers then followed this up by beating league leaders Middlesbrough 4-0 on Tuesday night, thanks to a goal apiece from Natasha Flint, Lynda Shepherd, Saffron Jordan and Lagan Makin.
Middlesbrough had earlier won 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion and this result has taken them nine points clear, although third placed Blackburn, a further two points adrift, have six games in hand. Bianca Owens was the heroine for 'Boro as she hit a hat-trick, with Albion's replies coming from Jennifer Kikomeko and Gina Burton.
Huddersfield Town moved up into second place with a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Danielle Whitham put Town in front just before the half hour and they wrapped up the win late on, when Ella Harris scored the second.
Leicester City Women's title hopes look to be over after they went down to a 3-2 defeat at home to Guiseley Vixens, who have moved off the bottom of the table. Emily Heckler scored her first goals for the club since joining, bagging a brace and Jessica Heald adding the other to seal Guiseley's first league victory of the season, Charlotte Greengrass and Paige Crossman were on target for the home side.
