Leaders Glasgow City survived a late scare to pick up an important three points against Spartans with a 3-1 win.
Kirsty Howat fired City into an early lead after only six minutes but the hosts were unable to add to their advantage until midway through the second half, when Abbi Grant was hauled down in the box and captain Leanne Ross converted the resultant penalty. Spartans got a goal back with a few minutes remaining through Elena Santoyo-Brown, but their hopes of a comeback were short lived as Leanne Crichton restored City's two-goal cushion less than a minute later with an excellent piece of composure and skill.
The result means that City stay on top of the table on goal difference from Hibernian, who ran out 5-0 winners over Rangers. In-form striker Lizzie Arnot was on target twice more and she was joined on the scoresheet by Lisa Robertson, Abigail Harrison and an own goal.
Celtic bounced back from their Premier League Cup Final disappointment with a 2-1 victory over Forfar Farmington which keeps them in third place. Forfar took the lead midway through the first half via a Nicola Davidson free kick but Celtic hit back to take the points with goals either side of half time from Josephine Giard and Colette Cavanagh.
Hamilton Academical are off the bottom of the table following their 2-1 win against Stirling University. After a goalless first half, Rebecca Galbraith put Stirling in front on the hour but goals in the last fifteen minutes from Megan Quigley and Katie Rice gave the Accies their second victory of the season.
