Regional Premier East Midlands News - Woodlands on the rise - 1 Jun 2018 - Women's Football News
Woodlands FC Ladies have had a very successful history, winning several league cups and league titles in younger age groups.
When the team moved into senior ladies football, they again managed to hold their own and win a few cups as well as back to back promotions out of the Derbyshire League and into the East Midlands Women's League Division One North. Having come third in their first season at that level, they were fortunate to add a few more quality players to their squad but never dreamt of having the season they have had.
This season's campaign started off with one of the toughest games as it turned out, against newly promoted Hykeham Town, scraping a 4-3 victory on the opening day of the season. Hykeham then went on to dominate the league and were top right up until the end of the season.
Things looked a bit ominous though as the team lost its vice captain, Emily Foss and their central midfielder within a couple of weeks of each other, both to season ending snapped ACLs.
Probably the ladies' best performance was one near the end of the season against a very strong and well organised Market Warsop side, where the players really dug deep, knowing that a victory would clinch the league title. After the match swung back and forth, eventually they came out on top, winning it 4-2.
Fittingly, the ladies finished the season needing to beat Lincoln Moorlands Railway to ensure Hykeham got the runners-up spot that they definitely deserved. The team finished top with 52 points and a plus 66 goal difference, largely thanks to the league's leading scorer and player of the season Jody Scott.
Although the league was a huge achievement, the team's biggest triumph was in April when they beat a Derby County team in the Derbyshire County Cup who had dominated the competition for the previous six years. The side was led out in the final by club captain, Katie Mayfield and although it was not the team's best footballing performance, they showed tremendous courage and determination to defend the lead they had from the first half to eventually win the game 3-0 and enter the history books.
The team has been incredibly fortunate to have some great sponsors over the years in www.qualitycare-em.co.uk and www.phoenixcnc.co.uk and all the ladies' publicity pictures are done by the ladies at www.truereflectionphotography.co.uk.
Woodlands Ladies are currently recruiting players to add to their existing squad as well as launching a new reserve team for the 2018-19 Season. If you are interested in joining then please contact us on info@woodlandsfc.org.uk where the coaching team of Dave Mayfield, Mark Webster, Lisa Cendrowski and Rachael Clench look forward to hearing from you.
