Good early form in both the SSE Women's FA Cup and League Cup meant that South Shields did not actually start their league fixtures until 1st October, when they won 4-3 against Boldon CA Villa.
They drew two of their first five matches, the return meeting with Boldon and against title rivals Boro Rangers, before they embarked on a run of eleven straight victories which saw them finish on top of the table by a comfortable margin of seven points. The league title was sealed with one game left to play, following their 2-1 victory over Consett Ladies.
Both cup runs were eventually ended by Premier Division Champions Norton & Stockton Ancients but South Shields can now look forward to pitting their wits in the top flight next season.
South Shields are managed by Stephen Lester with Abi Giles-Haigh as First team Coach. The club Captain is Alex Miller, although she was injured (ACL) in the first league game and Becki McMahon, the vice captain, took over for the duration.
Dionne Fleming topped the team's goalscoring charts with 24 goals to her name and Sophie Halliday led the assists with sixteen. Paige Lester was in second place in each list having found the net 17 times and with eleven assists, whilst also covering for several injuries in defence. Goalkeeper Donna Finlay, along with her defence, kept a total of ten clean sheets and only conceded 13 times overall.
"The team is now unbeaten in 21 league games, a run which stretches back to January 2017," manager Stephen Lester told Women's Soccer Scene. "Our best performance was a 5-1 home win against Boro Rangers, who finished as runners-up, having held us to a 3-3 draw the previous week.
"Special mention must go to our Welfare Officer and Club secretary Dianne Lester, who does all the organising, club logistics and keeps the girls in check!"
