Wymondham looking forward to season

Regional Premier Eastern News - Wymondham looking forward to season - 24 Aug 2018 - Women's Football News
Following Wymondham Town Ladies' first team's success last season, which saw them reach the FA Cup First Round Proper, win the Eastern Region League Division One North title undefeated and lift the Norfolk FA County Cup for the first time in the club's history, there has been a lot of excitement over the summer ahead of the new season.
This year will see the first team compete in their debut season in the Premier Division of the Eastern Region Women's Football League (ERWFL), having achieved the highest league position in the club's history.
Following last season's success, Wymondham have strengthened their squad, adding Olivia Gunn (Ipswich Town), Rebecca Russell (Sprowston) and Carolyn Sarafian (Cambridge United). Speaking on the signings, manager Alex Guy said: "We have created and developed a DNA and philosophy at the club and these players fit into who we are and how we play. They are exciting signings that add quality and options, as well as competition within the squad."
Wymondham's pre-season schedule has seen them face a variety of opposition, with the team developing throughout. Pre-season started with an away fixture versus Ipswich Town, who finished at the top end of the FA Women's Premier League last season, which saw Town's lack of sharpness punished in a 10-2 defeat. Wymondham followed this up with a more confident 4-1 win over Newmarket Town who have been promoted into the ERWFL Division One for the upcoming season. Boston were the third team on the pre-season schedule, which saw a very commanding performance from Wymondham, scoring seventeen without reply against last season's Lincolnshire County Cup winners. Despite missing several key players including their regular goalkeeper, Wymondham competed well with Peterborough but having taken the lead, Town found themselves 3-1 down before a goal in the last ten minutes made the final score 3-2. In their final pre-season fixture, Wymondham faced St Ives Town, who are another team that have just been promoted into the ERWFL Division One and showed they will compete well in the division this season; however, Wymondham dominated the game and possession scoring five times and keeping a clean sheet.
Wymondham opened their league campaign with an away game against last season's League Cup runners-up, AFC Dunstable, which resulted in an 8-1 win for Town who picked up the three points with goals coming from Laura Nicholls (4), Carolyn Sarafian, Bethany Fretwell and Chelsea Clarke.
Wymondham were also wearing their new first choice strip (pictured), which has been sponsored by Nexus Fostering, who have continued their much valued support of the first team for another season. Speaking about the sponsorship, Denise Roughan-Smith said: "We are proud to continue our sponsorship for the team this season by our Norfolk and Cambridge offices. We have a connection to the team through a member of one of our fostering families, and we are cheering the team on the whole way!"
