Larkhall Athletic produced one of the results of the round in the FAWNL League Cup on Sunday with a 3-2 victory over local rivals Keynsham Town.
We talked to Larkhall goalkeeper Nicki O'Connell, who praised the team's hard work in achieving the result and insisted that her team will be a stronger one this season:
WSS: What a great result for you on Sunday, how hard did you have to work for that victory?
NO: It was a great result for the girls and shows just how hard we have worked, not only during the match on Sunday, but in pre-season. Everyone played their part on and off the pitch, we pulled together and gave everything. I know there were times throughout the game when Keynsham were really pressing us but we defended well and worked for each other. We have a really good team spirit and work ethic which showed on Sunday.
WSS: Keynsham are one of the big favourites for the title in your division, how much confidence do you think this result will give the team?
NO: It gives the team great confidence and goes to show what we can do with the squad we have. We want to get back to a winning mentality after last season, not only win games but put in good performances and a win against one of the favourites shows that we can do this.
WSS: How important was it to bounce back from defeat at Poole the previous Sunday?
NO: It was very important as going to Poole and losing in the manner in which we did didn't show what we can do. We fielded a weakened team and this was reflected in the result. I can't take anything away from Poole, they took their chances so full credit to them, but it was one of those games where nothing fell for us and the weather conditions contributed strongly.
WSS: Overall though, are you satisfied by the way that Larkhall have started the season?
NO: Definitely, we have started well winning two of our three opening games. The two games we won were against strong teams and shows that we have the capabilities to compete in this league.
WSS: This week, you have to do it all over again as you play Keynsham once more in the league, presumably the team will be relishing this game whilst also being aware of a backlash?
NO: We do indeed, we expect Keynsham to come at us in the search of three points but we won't approach this game any differently to the last. They will obviously want to prove themselves with the squad they have but we will continue to play our game and focus on ourselves.
WSS: The squad as a whole is looking bigger and stronger at Larkhall this season, what do you think would be a good season for the club?
NO: Following the recruitment of a number of players, changes to our management team and a good pre-season, we are looking at a top half finish and a good run in the cup competitions. Last season was a real struggle but it has only made us stronger.
WSS: Keynsham and Southampton Women were amongst the main challengers last season and are expected to be up there time around, can you see any other sides in the division competing for it with them?
NO: I agree and they would be the standout teams for most people. I think Chesham will get better as the season goes on and Cheltenham have had a good start to the season, we can also beat anyone on our day so it definitely won't be easy for either of them.
Our thanks to Nicki!
