Warsash Wasps 3 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 1
Warsash Wasps progressed to the Second Round Qualifying of the SSE Women's Cup after a 3-1 home win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town at New Road.
Their reward is the shortest possible away trip along the A27 to play Southampton Saints of the FAWNL South West Division One after a well contested match against their South West Regional League Eastern Division opponents who were hit by the loss of their goalkeeper, Abi Footner, who suffered a facial injury midway through the second half.
Wasps, newly promoted to the Southern Region League Premier Division and playing on an immaculate newly laid pitch, found Bassett dogged opposition in a goalless first half.
It was the visitors who had the first shot on target from Emma Sykes on seven minutes and fully 20 minutes before Wasps had a dangerous attack with Megan Fox denied by a good tackle. The hosts grew into the game with Molly Booth sending a shot just wide on 28 minutes.
Both sides had defended soundly throughout an even first period but within a minute of the restart, Wasps took the lead when a free kick from the left was scrambled home at close range. Fox then had an effort well held by Footner as Wasps started the second half on top.
Royal Wootton Bassett fought back and Zoe Shellard was very unlucky to see her effort strike the bar and bounce clear as the visitors pressed. Footner received a nasty knock in coming out bravely to deny Danielle Cheyney just after the hour and was unable to continue with Shellard taking over the gloves,
Undeterred by the loss of Shellard in attack, Bassett continued to threaten and were level on 70 minutes when Laura Jeffries played in a low cross from the left and Lauren Usher drove a shot home at the far post. Parity was brief however as Fox, who had threatened a goal from long range on several occasions, found the top corner with a perfect strike from 25 yards on 74 minutes.
A third goal soon followed when Cheyney matched the previous goal with one of her own from distance and Wasps had some breathing space. Even so, Bassett made them fight all the way, mounting considerable pressure on Wasps' goal and going close on two or three occasions during the lengthy additional time.
Wasps themselves went close to a fourth through sub Stacey Parkinson on the breakaway but were eventually able to celebrate a victory against good opponents and an exciting tie in the next round.
