FA Women's Cup News - Saints progress in Cup derby - 5 Oct 2018 - Women's Football NewsSouthampton Saints 3 Warsash Wasps 0
FAWNL South West Division One side Southampton Saints set up an SSE FA Women's Cup Third Round Qualifying tie away to league rivals Keynsham Town with a dominant performance and a 3-0 win over local rivals Warsash Wasps at Sholing FC.
The Southern Region League Premier Division visitors battled hard throughout but were rarely able to threaten Saints' control of the match gained through an excellent team effort.
Skipper Krystal White's set pieces had caused difficulty for the Wasps defence even before the 13th minute curling free kick to the far post met by Sabrina Morriss-Manosalva on the volley for the opening goal.
Catherine Browning fired wide from a good position but was on hand to score the second after good work down the left by Morriss-Manosalva on the half hour. Emma Eldridge was inches away from a third and Wasps keeper Stacey Parkinson then made two fine blocking saves from Nadine Bazan and Browning to keep the visitors in the tie at the break.
Wasps started the second half on the front foot and dominated possession for the first ten minutes, winning the ball much higher up the pitch, but were restricted to a couple of long range efforts from skipper Megan Fox. Saints always looked dangerous in wide areas with Browning and Bazan and the latter rounded Parkinson before firing a shot against the post from a tight angle just after the hour.
Alisha Buckingham also starred in midfield for Saints and scored a superb third for the hosts to settle the outcome. A neat turn under pressure freed up space for Buckingham to fire a 25-yard rocket into the top left corner beyond Parkinson on 65 minutes.
Wasps continued to compete hard right up to the final whistle but attacks often broke down with the final pass as Saints, with the edge in experience and pace, looked to add to their advantage on the counter, but the Warsash defence held firm.
This win will surely have given Saints confidence before a challenging week with a home league match against Poole Town, and the next Cup tie on Sunday away to prolific Keynsham Town.
