Southern Premier Division leaders Coventry Utd booked their place in the Second Round of the FAWNL League Cup with a 3-2 victory over Watford on Sunday.
We talked to Coventry midfielder Jade Brook, who settled the match in her team's favour with a stunning 25-yard strike. She admitted that it was the best goal she has scored and, looking at the broader picture, is confident that this season could turn out to be a very special one for her club:
WSS: Your match against Watford was one of the ties of the round and lived up to its billing, what kind of match was it to play in?
JB: It was a great game, cup games are always exciting to be involved in! Drawing Watford was a tough test too, so a great win for us.
WSS: Did it get tough in the last few minutes or were you always confident of seeing the match through?
JB: It was tough. Watford weren't going to make it easy for us, but we managed the game and got the win we deserved.
WSS: We have to mention your winning goal of course, which has been viewed a lot of times on social media! What do you recall of the goal, and have you ever scored a better one?
JB: Social media has gone a bit crazy over it, I didn't expect it at all. It's definitely my best goal I've scored and one I'll remember. I remember doing a little one-two with Lois (Jefferies) and driving a little, caught the keeper off her line a little and thought ‘why not?' The strike was nice, I knew I'd connected well and it happened to literally end up in the top corner.
WSS: You have been in great goalscoring form since the season began, has there been any particular reason for that?
JB: I've scored a few and this is what I wanted to add to my game, more goals. I think as a team, we've just clicked and creating more opportunities. I'm playing more centrally too which I think suits me. But honestly, the whole team have been great and that's a huge factor!
WSS: This week you are up against Watford again, this time in the league but at your home venue. Are you expecting a similar kind of game to last Sunday?
JB: It will again be a tough one. Watford are a great side, the league is our priority and it's a must win game. We need to work hard this week in training and go into the game with confidence in ourselves.
WSS: Your team have started really well and the top of the table is looking really close right now. Do you think it is likely to stay that way throughout the season?
JB: That's the aim, we're going to do our absolute best to keep there but it's a very tough league and we have no room to slip up.
WSS: Coventry have been up amongst the leading teams over the last few seasons, do you feel the team is now ready for a serious challenge for the title?
JB: 100%. I've got such a great feeling about this season, the buzz about the girls is sky high and we're all on the same page! The new coaching staff Jay has brought in ,Jo and Mozza, have just upped the intensity and standards which is exactly what was needed.
WSS: A place in the Championship is the reward if you can land the league title this season, how much is the club geared up and ready if you are able to make the step up in the future?
JB: I think we're ready for this step. It would mean the world to me for this to happen and the rest of the girls, we're going do our absolute best to make this happen. We've had a great start,we've just got to keep the momentum going.
Our thanks to Jade!
