FA WSL news - Lehmann double sinks Royals - 23 Feb 2019 - Women's Football NewsReading FC Women 1 West Ham Utd 2
West Ham United notched up a fine away win in their WSL encounter with Reading at the Madjeski Stadium in front of over 2,000 fans.

A goal in each half from Alisha Lehmann was sufficient to beat Reading, for whom Fara Williams replied with a penalty. A solid defensive display restricted the hosts to a minimum of chances and the Hammers always posed a threat through the pace of Lehmann and Leanne Kiernan on the counter.

West Ham looked the sharper in the opening exchanges and took the lead when a fortunate rebound saw Lehmann run clear of the defence to finish calmly past the advancing Grace Moloney. Reading offered little in attack with Hammers keeper Anna Moorhouse quick off her line to smother the occasional through ball.

On 36 minutes, Rachel Furness lifted the home crowd by finding space to power in a far post header from a corner but Moorhouse reacted well to tip over.

Lehmann doubled the lead early in the second half when given acres of space on the right edge of the area to advance and drive home a shot high into the net.

The introduction of Rakel Honnudottir gave the home side a boost and she earned a penalty when Moorhouse was adjudged to have clipped the Icelandic forward as she moved on to a loose ball. Williams converted the spot kick but Reading were unable to build upon this lifeline, apart from a couple of scrambles in the West Ham area.

Hammers centre backs Gilly Flaherty and Brooke Hendrix were very strong in the air throughout and experienced wing backs Ria Percival and Erin Simon ensured that there were few moments of danger as the visitors comfortably saw out the five added minutes to record a well deserved win with a solid team performance.
