Denham Utd 1 Ipswich Town 3
Ipswich Town retained eighth place in the FAWNL Division One South East table with a 3-1 away win over Denham United at The Den, scoring early and late to overcome a spirited home team who had plenty of chances to change the outcome.
A fine display by visiting keeper Sian Fagg denied Denham on several occasions whilst the Tractor Girls made the most of their opportunities in attack.
Denham, one off the bottom of the division, got off to the worst possible start as Natasha Thomas opened the scoring for Ipswich barely fifteen seconds into the match, turning sharply to curl a shot past Lizzie Rose from 15 yards. The visitors continued to threaten in the early stages, having another effort disallowed for offside, but Denham soon settled into their game, penning the visitors back.
Fagg made her first important save, turning away a dipping shot from distance but was beaten by a headed equaliser from Kayleigh Currivan on 26 minutes. Lauren Cox almost gave Denham the lead but Fagg blocked her close range effort. Instead, it was the visitors who retook the lead right on the half time whistle when Toni-Anne Wayne took the ball round the advancing Rose to finish from close in.
Denham started the second half on the front foot and were denied an equaliser by Fagg turning away a header from Annie Hewitt's free kick with a follow up shot deflecting to safety off the woodwork. Fagg was out quickly to clear from Currivan on 56 minutes and again when she outpaced the defence on 60 minutes, the keeper staying tall to block the striker's shot.
Little was seen of the Ipswich attack for the majority of the second half with home skipper Jo Torr and Rachel Knightley coping well with the occasional counter attack. However, the introduction of Charlotte Kellett in attack gave the visitors more threat as the home side pushed on in search of a precious point.
Kellett fired over after breaking clear but it was Thomas who settled the outcome with the third on 89 minutes, firing in from close range after winning a challenge wide on the left, although the hosts protested that a defender was fouled to create the chance.
Ipswich were the more clinical in front of goal but Denham can take the positives from a committed and lively display as they battle to climb up the table with just three games left to play.
