Chester-le-Street Town are having a great season in FAWNL Division One North and their 2-1 win away to Morecambe on Sunday maintained their excellent away form in the league, whilst also keeping them in the driving seat for a top two place.
We talked to Chester-le-Street captain Anna Collin, who was delighted the result against Morecambe and admitted that the team hasn't given up yet on chasing after leaders Burnley FC Women:
WSS: Well done on a good result on Sunday, how pleasing was it after such a long journey to Lancashire?
AC: It was an excellent result for us on Sunday, especially after going 1-0 down, to come back and win it in the last ten minutes just made it even sweeter. All of the girls were over the moon on the (long) bus journey home.
WSS: Given that Morecambe went into the game on a five match unbeaten run in the league, does that make it an even better result on the day?
AC: Morecambe are always a hard team to play when they are at home so we knew it wouldn't be easy, especially as they were having a spell of good form. We knew they would come out fighting as they need the points and are in a similar situation to we were last year. However, we knew if we took our chances and concentrated on our own game we would be able to get something out of the game.
WSS: That makes it eight wins in ten away matches for Chester-le-Street in the league this season, can you put your finger on why your away record is so good?
AC: We have had some great results away from home this season. I think the long away trips have given us time to bond as a team and get to know some of the new players who have just joined this season. This is definitely something that has helped us out on the pitch.
WSS: Is it a little frustrating though that your home record isn't quite the same, with four defeats?
AC: It is slightly disappointing but it's just one of those things. Sometimes we just have a bad game or are a bit light on the ground, these things can't be helped.
WSS: This week you have a chance to improve that record when you play Chorley, what kind of game are you expecting against them?
AC: We played Chorley earlier in the season and it was a really close game, where we nicked the three points in the last few minutes. I'll be expecting exactly the same this week. They always have a strong, decent team.
WSS: The Morecambe result means you are six points behind Burnley with four games to play, can you still catch them?
AC: Never say never!
WSS: If you end up in the top three, it would be the club's highest ever finish. How big an achievement would that be for Chester-le-Street?
AC: Yeah, it'd be a great season for us if we managed to finish in the top three. It's been a great season so far, let's just hope we can end the season as well as we started it.
WSS: Are you confident that you can keep this season's momentum going into the next campaign and be amongst the top sides once again?
AC: Yes definitely! We have a great squad this season with plenty of young, exciting players coming through our reserve team. Hopefully we can strengthen in the summer and have a go at the league next season.
Our thanks to Anna!
