Woking Ladies 4 Binfield 1
Woking clinched the Thames Valley Counties Division Two East title with a 4-1 victory over Binfield at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
This win, their third in eight days, finally took Woking out of reach of nearest challengers Hawley and guaranteed top spot in front of an enthusiastic three figure attendance.
Woking started superbly with three goals inside the opening fifteen minutes but the rest of the match was very even with mid-table Binfield competing really well and creating several chances to mount a comeback before reducing the deficit with 20 minutes to go. Woking added a late fourth to clinch the three points and the celebrations could begin.
Woking opened the scoring on five minutes with a very good finish by Shelley Hankins and added a second through Hester Benham two minutes later. Attacking at will, the hosts were in total control when, after good work by Ella Chandler, Hankins was tripped in the area and Laura Wallman converted the penalty on 11 minutes.
Wallman had another effort ruled out for offside before Binfield got into the contest. The visitors had attackers with real pace and trickery and, once they received good service, proved a real challenge to the Woking defence. Goalkeeper Roz Markham was really quick off her line to save from Kiah Owen and Ruth Bowerman almost took advantage of a defensive error, firing inches wide.
The ever dangerous Hankins twice went close to adding to Woking's lead before the break but, on the restart, it was Binfield who created the better chances. Markham saved well again in one on one before Bowerman burst clear again, rounded the keeper and was hauled back as she shot. Natalie Beachy converted the resulting spot kick to give Binfield a lifeline on 66 minutes.
Binfield's Bowerman was denied again by a last ditch tackle and Owen fired over after an excellent fast break from a Woking corner.
The home side had exerted plenty of pressure in a compelling second half but the final ball was lacking until, on 90 minutes, sub Cally Lewis found the perfect through ball for Hankins who took the ball past the last defender before driving the ball home in style.
Woking now have the chance to complete a League and Cup double on the 12th May at the Thames Valley Counties League finals day at Wantage Town F.C.
