Southampton Women 4 Portishead Town 0
Southampton Women ended Portishead Town's fine Women's FA Cup run with a 4-0 home First Round proper victory at Romsey Town FC.
Erin Bloomfield netted a hat-trick as the hosts eased to an ultimately comfortable win after a fiercely contested first half where the South West Regional League Premier Division visitors worked very hard to successfully contain their higher league opponents.
Visiting goalkeeper Chloe Fensome, who had a fine match, made an early save to deny Laura Vokes and EJ May hit the base of the upright with a curling effort from 20 yards on nine minutes but for the most part, the Posset defence was rock solid, tackling and clearing danger to frustrate the Southampton attackers.
It took an exceptional through pass on the half hour to release Bloomfield to round the advancing Fensome and score the opener. Portishead had their first dangerous moment on 39 minutes when a fine run and cross from Emily Lindsey was nearly converted by Shannon Holloway at the near post but Southampton went to the break with a narrow lead.
The home side powered into the second half with real intent and soon added two more goals to effectively settle the outcome of the tie.
Bloomfield added her second on 48 minutes, converting a flick on from a Vokes corner and Jane Yeates scored the third five minutes later, turning the ball home after another Bloomfield effort had been blocked from a Hannah Samuels cross from the left.
Nathalie Zajaczkowski forced a save from home keeper Millie Peake as Portishead pushed forward to try to reduce the deficit but it was the strength of the home bench which ensured that the majority of the action was at the other end. Substitute Kayleigh Tonks made a big impression down the left, drawing a foul after a tricky run, allowing Bloomfield to complete her hat-trick with a penalty on 78 minutes.
The roles were nearly reversed when Tonks powered a header inches wide from a Bloomfield cross and with another substitute, Charlie Taylor making an impressive debut, Southampton finished the match in control and moving the ball fluently all over the pitch.
Portishead continued to battle hard right to the final whistle but their Cup adventure, and longest run so far, was over in the face of a very impressive team performance from the hosts.
