Ascot Utd 6 Warsash Wasps 0
Ascot United gained their second Southern Region League Premier Division win of the season at the Racecourse Ground with an impressive six-goal haul against Warsash Wasps.
Clinical finishing by the Yellawomen was matched by a very good defensive effort to keep out a lively and spirited Wasps attack and secure a clean sheet.
Ascot took the lead in the 10th minute with a super first time hit from 20 yards by Lauren Townsend after a backheel set up from Emma Hutton. Another fine shot from distance doubled the advantage, this time from skipper Hannah Evans on 14 minutes. Inbetween, home keeper Lisa Phillips had made the first of several good saves, turning away Danielle Cheyney's shot for a corner.
Both sides looked dangerous going forward in an open encounter, Annie Ackroyd powering down the right numerous times to play in dangerous crosses for Ascot whilst Wasps frequently built up good passing moves to try to release the lively Hannah Chaffey in attack.
Wasps keeper Rebecca Gardiner was quick off her line to save bravely at the feet of Hutton to keep Wasps in the match at the break.
She was again in action soon after the restart, turning away a powerful Evans shot at her near post on 47 minutes. However a fine one-two between Evans and Townsend allowed the latter to add the third on 56 minutes.
Ascot substitute Steph Fettes fired a difficult chance over the bar but Warsash were also creating opportunities, Phillips saving well from Chaffey twice and Cheyney in one-on-one battles after good Wasps build up play had beaten the Ascot defence.
Three goals in the final fifteen minutes made the final margin of victory rather harsh on Warsash but there were more excellent build ups from the hosts to savour. A lovely through ball from Laura Spark set up Fettes for the fourth, then scorer turned provider, Fettes crossing for another sub Freya Johnson to chip a superb first time effort over the diving Gardiner at the near post.
Johnson notched her second with a low finish on 90 minutes as Ascot ended the match in style and in control, but for the most part Warsash had competed well in an enjoyable contest.
