English County and other Leagues News - Slough foiled by Valley - 15 Dec 2019 - Women's Football NewsSlough Town 1 Mole Valley Development 1
Slough were frustrated by the woodwork and fine defending in an exciting Thames Valley Counties Division Three East encounter with the league leaders at the start of the day Mole Valley Development at Arbour Park.
The team exchanged goals in an even first period but the hosts dominated after the break, creating a host of chances but being unable to find the winner.
The visitors, full of pace and neat interpassing, were frequently threatening on the break in the first twenty minutes but Slough were very effective themselves in attack. Shannon Daly creating three early chances with strong running and clever passing.
Nicole Sandhu twice went close to giving Slough the lead with a shot and a header inches wide but it was Valley who opened the scoring on 19 minutes, Caitlin Weir firing low after a good run into the area.
Daly again set up Sandhu on 24 minutes with a header but the shot crashed against the underside of the bar and away. Mole Valley were close to a second but Brooke Pomeroy made a fine interception and the hosts levelled from a free kick, Sandhu turning the ball past keeper Amber Clipperton and Charli Davies following up to turn home the rebound from the upright on 34 minutes.
Ellie Hitchins took over in goal for Mole Valley at the break and was soon in action, producing a string of fine saves to repel the Slough attackers. Kym Stenson saw a powerful drive held at full stretch, then the keeper was bravely out to turn away a Davies shot.
Best of all, Hitchins raced off her line to foil Daly in a one on one before seeing another Sandhu shot cannon to safety off the bar on 70 minutes as Slough pressurised relentlessly.
The visitors weathered the storm and started to threaten a late winner. Bethany Anderson raced down the right and set up a chance which went just wide and home keeper Chloe Heatherington had to be quick off her line to cut another dangerous cross.
Honours remained even to the final whistle after a contest of great endeavour and full of good play from both teams in what looks to be a very competitive league.
