English County and other Leagues News - Benfica's double joy - 27 Jun 2021 - Women's Football NewsSport London E Benfica 2 Edgware Town 1
Sport London e Benfica finished a superb campaign by lifting the Capital Junior Cup to go with their Greater London League Division One North title.
The cup final victory was a hard fought affair, Benfica coming from a goal down to defeat a brave and resilient opponent in Edgware Town at Surrey FA headquarters in Dorking.
In truth, Benfica dominated possession for much of the contest, moving the ball fluently with Shani Minors bossing midfield and Gaynor Kelman a constant threat on the left. However they were met with a rock solid Edgware defence in the first half with Claudia Kelly, Ivanka Koleva and Lauren Currell protecting goalkeeper Avril Clark superbly.
The match really caught fire after the break. Monique Mitchell-Marshall led the Edgware attack tirelessly and her goalbound effort was saved by Tamsin Wickens only for Shazell Pascall to turn home the rebound.
Crucially, Benfica responded quickly and Iselin Vestnes levelled with a fine turn and shot from the edge of the area on 50 minutes. Currell then made a superb goal line clearance to keep things level.
It was the strength of Benfica's squad which was really noticeable as every replacement in attack seemed to bring a new goal threat.
Kally-Ann Westgarth had a shot tipped over and Michaela Green sent a volley just wide as Benfica pressed. Eventually, a disputed corner brought the winner but there was no disputing the quality of Kelman's delivery nor the power of Sarah Whale's headed finish from 10 yards.
Edgware fought hard through six minutes of added time to find an equaliser but to no avail. Player of the match Hope Taylor and the rest of the Benfica defence saw out the match in comfort for a well earned victory after an exciting encounter.
Both teams were well supported by travelling fans, creating an excellent atmosphere for the players to enjoy. A fitting end to a difficult season saw both teams warmly applauded as Benfica lifted the cup and celebrated appropriately.
