WNL Division 1 South East News - Actonians edge local derby - 28 Aug 2021 - Women's Football NewsActonians 1 Queen's Park Rangers 0
Actonians overcame newly promoted local rivals Queen's Park Rangers in their midweek FAWNL Division One South East encounter at Rectory Park.
A superb strike by Greta Humphries around the hour mark settled the match but QPR were competitive throughout as they looked to back up their excellent start to the season.
Actonians started very well with much of their best play coming down the right. Humphries had an early shot deflected wide, Sharon Odofin and Ashleigh Ward combined very well to create crossing positions and several corners.
QPR keeper Katie McLean had a fine game and her first contribution was a pinpoint pass for Erin Pope whose first time effort was well saved by home keeper Paige Horsnell on 20 minutes.
QPR had a fine spell towards the end of the half, piling on the pressure, hitting the woodwork and having a shot cleared off the line but the half ended all square.
The see-saw battle continued until the moment Humphries picked a ball in midfield, drove forward then launched a 30-yard rocket high beyond the keeper for a stunning goal.
QPR could have been level immediately after a mix-up in the home defence saw a Demi Edwards shot strike the base of a post before landing in Horsnell's hands.
Actonians responded to this close shave with an excellent last quarter of the match. They created a series of chances with some great passing moves but could not find a way past McLean, who turned away a Rhiannon Ishmael header before tipping over a powerful Meila D'Santos drive. Alessandra Barreca hit the bar with delightful free kick effort and there was still always the chance of a QPR counter right till the final whistle.
The sides had met recently in the Capital Senior Cup final with QPR emerging victorious but both teams have welcomed several newcomers to their ranks this season. Fittingly perhaps it was one of the new faces who provided a moment to remember in a highly competitive derby.
