![]() att: 27,258; at Stadion im Borussia-Park, Moenchengladbach Runners-up last time around, Brazil began their World Cup challenge with a victory but were pushed hard by an Australian side which suggested they are capable of going further in the tournament themselves. Both sides exchanged efforts on goal early on, Collette McCallum firing a free kick inches over for the Aussies while Rosana was also just off target at the other end with a header. Australia continued to play without fear of their illustrious opponents with Kyah Simon forcing a good save from Andreia and Lisa De Vanna snatching at a chance following a mistake by Aline. Brazil hit back and passed up a great chance as Marta made a dangerous run, setting up Rosana who lifted her shot over from ten yards. Rosana made no mistake early in the second half for what was to be the only goal of the game. The Matildas failed to clear the ball properly as it pinged around the edge of the area and Rosana capitalised to bury a firm shot past a helpless Melissa Barbieri and into the corner of the net. Brazil were not at their best and began to run the clock down as the game went into the latter stages. Australia meanwhile worked hard to try and get back on level terms and went close when a cross from Tameka Butt just eluded Heather Garriock in front of goal. De Vanna then latched onto a long ball and looked set to equalise but, with only Andreia to beat, shot wildly over the bar. As the game went into the final minute of injury time, Australia won a corner which was taken by McCallum whose kick was not dealt with by the Brazilian defence. Two shots were charged down in the ensuing scramble before the final whistle sounded to confirm victory for a relieved Brazil.
