Arsenal win dramatic FIFA Challenge Cup Final

Arsenal were crowned the inaugural champions of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup after a thrilling 3-2 extra time victory over Brazil's Corinthians at the Emirates Stadium.

In a dramatic final that captivated a capacity crowd in north London, the Gunners lifted the new global club trophy in front of their home supporters, adding to their recent UEFA Women’s Champions League success.

Olivia Smith gave Arsenal an early lead in the 15th minute, reacting quickest to slot home after Stina Blackstenius' shot was saved by Corinthians goalkeeper Leticia. The Brazilian side responded swiftly, with veteran Gabi Zanotti equalising following a goalmouth scramble from a corner, ensuring the teams went in level at the break after an entertaining first half.

Arsenal regained the advantage shortly after the interval. Frida Maanum replaced Blackstenius at half time, and it was defender Lotte Wubben-Moy who headed firmly in from an Emily Fox cross in the 58th minute to make it 2-1.

Anneke Borbe produced several key saves to keep Corinthians at bay, including denying a dangerous Jhonson break, while Caitlin Foord struck the post as Arsenal pressed for a third.

With the clock ticking into stoppage time, the referee — after consulting VAR — awarded Corinthians a penalty for a foul by Katie McCabe. Vic Albuquerque converted coolly from the spot in the 96th minute to force extra time.

The additional period began with Borbe tipping an Albuquerque header onto the roof of the net, but Arsenal struck decisively in the 104th minute. Maanum surged forward on the counter attack and fed Caitlin Foord, who smashed a low, powerful finish past Leticia to restore the lead at 3-2.

The Gunners held firm through the remaining minutes, despite a late injury to the impressive Borbe following a collision with Wubben-Moy in the dying seconds.

Arsenal maintained their composure to see out the victory, becoming the first ever winners of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup and etching their name into women’s football history at home. A memorable occasion for Renée Slegers’ side, who now hold both the European and intercontinental club crowns.
