Barclays Women’s Championship

Four wins out of four now for league leaders Charlton Athletic who returned from Blackburn Rovers with a 2-0 victory under their belts, to maintain their lead of three points at the top of the table.

Karin Muya got the Addicks off to a great start by giving them the lead with just eleven minutes on the cloak and Elisha N’Dow wrapped up the win with the second, just after the half hour.

Durham Women had suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Charlton seven days earlier but they made the perfect response, bouncing back to beat Birmingham City 1-0 and replace them in second place. Lily Crosthwaite has been in excellent form for the Wildcats since the start of the season and two minutes into the second half, she dispossessed a Blues defender by the halfway line before running through on goal and tucking the ball past Lucy Thomas for the only goal of the game.

Birmingham slip back to third and head a quartet of teams on seven points, now including Southampton who were 2-0 winners over Sheffield Utd. The first half was goalless, mainly due to two excellent saves from Blades goalkeeper Sian Rogers but there was nothing she could do just after the hour mark when Freya Gregory opened the scoring with a powerful left foot strike. United went forward in search of a leveller but a fine move by Saints late on ended with Rachel Rowe sliding a through ball into the path of Rianna Dean who made no mistake in slotting past Rogers for the match clinching goal.

Newcastle Utd are one of only two teams who are still unbeaten, preserving that record by winning 2-0 away to Portsmouth. In the clash between the two clubs who were promoted at the start of the season, Amy Andrews gave Newcastle the lead ten minutes before half time after being found in the area by Jasmine McQuade, who went on to score the second herself after the break when she finished off Isabella Sibley’s low deflected cross at the far post.

It has not been an easy start to the season tier Sunderland but on Sunday, they notched up their first win of the campaign when they beat London City Lionesses 1-0. The Wearsiders needed to withstand first half pressure from the Lionesses but on the hour, they went in front when Natasha Fenton volleyed home at the far post. London City nearly equalised late on when Kosovare Asllani hit the post but Sunderland could have doubled their lead in injury time when Katy Watson was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded, Emily Scarr stepped up but saw her kick bring out a good save from Emily Orman.
