FA Women’s National League

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Plymouth Argyle 0

Wolverhampton Wanderers clinched promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the Premier Division Play-Off Final at the Pirelli Stadium.

The two sides were evenly matched for much of the contest, with Plymouth enjoying the better chances in the first half before Wolves turned the tide after the break. Charlotte Greengrass scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute, and the West Midlands side then showed strong defensive resolve to hold on for a famous victory.

Both goalkeepers were called into action early. Alex Brooks was the busier of the two for Wolves, producing important saves to deny Phoebie Poole and Olivia Francis. Charlotte Greengrass also tested Plymouth keeper Hermione Cull, who was later required to punch clear a dangerous corner.

Plymouth continued to press forward, with Francis sending an effort narrowly wide and Ellie Noble seeing her shot well handled by Brooks. Tianna Teisar then forced another strong stop from Brooks, who tipped the ball behind for a corner. Francis had one final attempt before half time, but Brooks remained equal to it and was later named Player of the Match for her performance.

The momentum shifted in favour of Wolverhampton Wanderers after the interval. Cull produced a fine save to keep out Greengrass, who then struck the post moments later, with the rebound bouncing agonisingly across the face of goal and to safety.

Greengrass would not be denied for long; in the 64th minute, she capitalised on a defensive error to fire home and give Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Plymouth responded with renewed attacking intent but were repeatedly frustrated by a resilient Wolves defence. Phoebie Poole’s neat effort was saved, while Charlotte Whitmore saw her header stopped and smothered by Brooks. Tamara Wilcock had the last chance of the match with a header that was cleared off the line.

Despite their efforts, Argyle were unable to find an equaliser as Wolves celebrated promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 for the first time in the club’s history.

Norwich City 2 Moneyfields 2

(Norwich won 4-3 on penalties)

Norwich City earned promotion to the third tier of English women’s football for the first time in their history after defeating Moneyfields 4-3 on penalties in the Division One South East v South West Play-Off Final at the Pirelli Stadium.

Holly Kennard and Grace Riglar gave the Canaries a two-goal lead inside the opening fifteen minutes, only for Moneyfields to respond through captain Ali Hall and Britt Jeal. With the score locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the contest went to a nailbiting penalty shootout, where Norwich skipper Sarah Quantrill emerged as the heroine with two crucial saves, including one in sudden death.

Norwich started brightly and took control early. Grace Riglar sent a header just wide in the second minute before Mia King was called upon to make the first save of the afternoon from Evie Williams. Moments later, Poppy Groves capitalised on a loose clearance and squared for Holly Kennard, who fired home to give the Canaries a deserved lead.

The advantage was doubled almost immediately. Top scorer Grace Riglar rose highest to head home Lara Densley’s corner, putting Norwich firmly in command.

Moneyfields hit back before half time to open up the match again. Ali Hall converted from close range, and Britt Jeal then slid the ball past Quantrill to level the scores at the break.

The second half was less open, though both sides created moments of danger. Sarah Quantrill was forced into early action, while Evie Williams had to react sharply to clear a dangerous header off the line. Natasha Snelling thought she had restored Norwich’s lead with ten minutes remaining, but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Holly Kennard came closest to a winner in normal time, only for King to produce a brilliant one-on-one save and send the final to penalties.

In the shootout, Hope Strauss saw her effort saved for Norwich, but Quantrill responded superbly by denying Sophie Phelps. With the shootout going to sudden death, the Norwich captain made another vital save to seal promotion for her childhood club.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Norwich City, who will compete in the third tier of the women’s pyramid for the first time next season.

Boldmere St Michaels 3 Cheadle Town Stingers 0

Laura Cooper’s brace helped Boldmere St Michaels secure promotion to Tier 3 of English women’s football as they defeated Cheadle Town Stingers 3-0 in the FA Women’s National League Division One Play-Off Final at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

The Division One Midlands runners-up produced an impressive performance to overcome the reigning FA WNL Plate champions, becoming the fifth team to earn promotion from the regional fourth tier this season.

Boldmere made a bright start and took the lead inside ten minutes. Ridhi Ruparelia threaded a precise pass through the Cheadle defence, allowing Keeley Davies to latch onto the ball, cut inside, and slot calmly past the keeper.

The Midlands side doubled their advantage on 20 minutes. Annie Ackroyd delivered an excellent cross from the right, and Laura Cooper produced a clinical finish from the edge of the box, smashing her shot in off the woodwork.

Cheadle attempted to respond before half time, with Lily Weston trying her luck from distance on 39 minutes, but her effort was comfortably gathered by Boldmere goalkeeper Ellie Mae Locke.

Cooper sealed the victory in the 73rd minute. Substitute Natasha Bailey made an immediate impact with a dangerous cross, which Cooper converted to complete her brace and make it 3-0.

Despite pushing forward in the closing stages, Cheadle were unable to find a way back. Kenzie Bentley forced a strong save from Locke, but the Greater Manchester outfit could not breach the resolute Boldmere defence.

The result marks a historic promotion for Boldmere St Michaels, rewarding an excellent season in which they finished second in the Division One Midlands.
