Farnborough on a roll
Farnborough FC Women 2 Gosport Borough 1
Farnborough stretched their winning streak to 13 matches, ending 2024 on a high with a 2-
After an opening day FA Cup defeat, Boro have progressed to the semi finals of the Invitation Cup and won their first eight league matches after their double promotion.
Despite dominating for much of the match, Farnborough were made to work hard by a resilient Gosport team who are also having a good season. Two goals early in the second half rewarded continual home pressure but the visitors had enough threat on the counter to make it an exciting contest.
Farnborough made all the early moves to threaten a breakthrough with fluent attacking play, Ellie Stalley and Farrah Yewings on the wings getting in some great positions for crosses and shots whilst player of the match Izzy Woodger controlled the middle of the park.
Gosport suddenly came into the match jin the final minutes of the half with three decent chances to take an interval lead. Home keeper Morgan Palmer was well placed to hold the first two shots from distance but was saved by the woodwork from Chelsie Hay's lofted effort on 43 minutes.
Farnborough resumed their control after the break and it was an Ellie Stalley corner on 52 minutes which to Yewings stabbing home a loose ball for the opener. Palmer saved well from Jodie Goodall on 57 minutes to prevent a Gosport leveller, reacting quickly to drop on a shot at the foot of the post.
Ailsa Winter adding a superb second on the hour. Controlling a loose ball on the left corner of the area, Winter took a touch before firing left footed back across goal to double the lead.
The hosts pressed forward hitting the frame of the goal and drawing further good saves from the impressive Jade Melissa Albury.
With a few minutes left, the visitors struck back with a finely worked move. Hay and Goodall exchanged first time passes to open up the home central defence and Goodall fired past the advancing Palmer.
Farnborough resumed their attacking mode to ensure a deserved win and complete a wonderful 2024 including a County Cup win and double promotion.
