Scotland fell to a 4-0 defeat against Germany at Tannadice Park in their UEFA Women’s Nations League outing.

Interim head coach Michael McArdle making three changes to the side that lost 2-1 to the Netherlands. Erin Cuthbert, Martha Thomas, and Amy Rodgers came into the starting XI in place of Kirsty Hanson, Kirsty MacLean, and Lauren Davidson.

Scotland were on the back foot almost immediately as Germany took the lead within two minutes. A scramble following a corner allowed Elisa Senß to fire past Gibson from inside the penalty area.

Germany nearly doubled their advantage soon after when Jule Brand outpaced Emma Lawton on the right and shot across goal, only for Jenna Clark to deflect the effort over the bar. Scotland registered their first attempt in the 8th minute after patient build-up play, but Clark’s shot from the edge of the box was easily held by Ann-Katrin Berger.

Growing into the game after the early setback, Scotland gained confidence in possession. On 19 minutes, Erin Cuthbert’s curling cross found Eilidh Adams, but the striker couldn’t steer her header on target. Moments later, Germany struck again. Linda Dallman advanced unchecked before feeding Brand, whose cross was inadvertently turned into her own net by Sophie Howard.

Germany threatened a third around the half hour mark when Brand’s low ball across goal was inches from being tapped in, though Howard redeemed herself with a crucial last-ditch tackle. Scotland had a chance to halve the deficit when Cuthbert seized possession and set up Caroline Weir, but the midfielder’s long range effort sailed over the bar. The first half ended with Germany leading 2-0.

The visitors started the second period brightly, spurning a golden opportunity when Brand’s cut back narrowly evaded substitute Cora Zicai. However, Germany did extend their lead in the 56th minute, Dallman drove forward from the Scotland half and picked out Zicai, who curled a fine finish off the post and past Gibson to make it 3-0.

Minutes later, a midfield error allowed Lea Schüller to race through one-on-one with Gibson, and the striker dispatched a clinical shot into the far corner for Germany’s fourth.

Despite the scoreline, Scotland pressed forward. Lauren Davidson skipped past Dallman to the byline, only for the German to recover and block the move. From a Weir corner, substitute Kirsty Hanson attempted an overhead kick, but Germany cleared their lines. Scotland’s best chance arrived in the 78th minute when Cuthbert’s pinpoint cross met Jenna Clark at the penalty spot, though the Liverpool defender’s glancing effort drifted just wide.

Gibson produced a superb save soon after, denying Giulia Gwinn’s close range strike. Kirsty Smith nearly pulled one back in the 86th minute with a cross that almost looped over Berger, while Kirsty MacLean’s subsequent long range attempt veered wide.

Scotland came closest to scoring late on when a rare German defensive lapse let Hanson in behind. She teed up Davidson via Cuthbert, whose blocked shot fell back to Davidson—only for Berger’s fingertips to tip her effort onto the bar.
