Glasgow City triumph after eight-
Glasgow City produced a breathtaking finale, scoring twice in stoppage time to clinch a dramatic 5-
The Danish league leaders arrived with a slender advantage from last week’s first leg, but Leanne Ross’ side overturned the deficit in an eight-
Køge struck early, threatening to extinguish City’s hopes after just three minutes. Mille Gejl, who scored in the first leg, capitalised on a short corner routine with Rikke Madsen, steering a low drive into the far corner from inside the penalty area. However, Glasgow responded with urgency, moving the ball with far greater tempo than in Denmark. They levelled on the night within six minutes when captain Amy Muir released Nicole Kozlova down the left. The former Køge player’s low cross was clinically dispatched by strike partner Abby Harrison.
Goalkeeper Lee Gibson produced a string of fine saves to keep Køge at bay, and City drew level on aggregate in the 25th minute. Muir’s pinpoint cross found Emily Whelan, who powered a header past Køge’s Ema Aleksić. The hosts’ joy was short lived, as veteran forward Nadia Nadim, formerly of Manchester City, restored Køge’s lead two minutes later. Cutting in from the left, the Danish international sent a powerful right footed strike over Gibson into the far corner.
Glasgow fought back before the break, taking the lead on the night when Harrison met a Lisa Evans corner, with the ball deflecting off Køge’s Emma Pelkowski for an own goal.
The tie remained on a knife edge, and Køge looked to have landed a decisive blow six minutes from time when Sarah Thygesen pounced on an Emma Brownlie error to slot home. Yet, City refused to surrender. Brownlie redeemed herself in stoppage time, rising to head another Evans corner and level the aggregate score.
As extra time loomed, substitute Lisa Forrest sparked joyous scenes among the home fans, heading a Sofia Maatta cross over the stranded Aleksić to seal a historic victory.
The stunned Køge players were left in tears as Glasgow City celebrated their sensational comeback, ensuring their progression in the Women’s Europa Cup and rekindling memories of the two occasions when they have reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
