Marine aiming to sail on in Cup

For the first time in the club’s history, Marine Academy Plymouth play in the Second Round Proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup as they host Bristol Rovers, an occasion everyone at the club is looking forward to.

The teams nearly met at this stage last season, with MAP going out on a penalty shootout in the previous round to Keynsham Town, who went on to be paired with Bristol Rovers in the Second Round. Sam Drewery is the club’s leading scorer and has been regularly on the scoresheet at Regional League level over the last few years, and she told Women’s Soccer Scene that they are looking forward to testing themselves against the club which won their league last season.

“It’s been a fairly comfortable passage so far to get to this stage with the 3-1 win at Gloucester City proving to be the toughest hurdle to date,” she said. “We are under no illusions however that this game will be a massive step up in quality and a real test, but one the players and management are relishing.

“Bristol Rovers were deserved winners of our league last season, beating us twice and have adapted comfortably in the league above but we did produce a fantastic team performance to beat them in the Cup Final to claim a piece of silverware for us.

“Both teams have seen changes to their squads going into the new campaign and we have had a changeable team in recent weeks, with injuries in particular meaning the whole squad has been utilised to its full capacity.

“The MAP Football network is a real community football club with 30 competing sides each weekend in a variety of ages and comprises six girls sides who we hope will be inspired to keep playing the game and come through to be the MAP Ladies players of the future.”

Six former MAP youth players are included in this Sunday’s squad, including 18-year-old Yazmyn Golley who had this to say about the match: “Over the years, as both a youth player and now part of the Ladies I have been fortunate enough to be part of some great sides with fantastic players and played in many games that resulted in league, cup and county honours and national tournaments.

“My personal ambition and that of the club is to get MAP into the FA National League and that remains the aim, but to get to this stage of the FA Cup has created a real buzz around the club and the team and we are all excited to see if we can progress another round.”

Greg Mogford, manager of the side stated: “A fantastic occasion for this young side to go out and give it a real go with nothing to lose. I echo Yazmyn’s thoughts on the game and even though we go in as underdogs, we know on our day as we proved in the cup final we can produce a performance to cause an upset.”
