Millie Bright to miss Euro finals

England defender Millie Bright has ruled herself out of this summer’s European Championship, citing an inability to perform at her peak mentally and physically.

The 31-year-old, who withdrew from the recent UEFA Women’s Nations League squad for the matches against Portugal and Spain, is taking an extended recovery period, according to the Football Association.

Bright, Chelsea’s captain, attributed her decision to burnout following a demanding season, during which she made 36 appearances and helped her club secure the Women’s Super League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles.

The centre back - a key performer in England’s Euro 2021 success - becomes the third prominent England player to miss the tournament, set to take place in Switzerland from 2-27 July, following the recent retirement announcements of goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby.

In an Instagram statement, Bright described the decision as one of the toughest of her career. “Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour,” she wrote. “My pride and ego tell me to go, but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now, I’m not able to give 100% mentally or physically.”

She added that stepping back was necessary for her health, her future in football, and the team’s success, noting it would be unfair to take a squad place from a player fully prepared to represent England:

"As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my team-mates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future in the game and most importantly the team."
