Northern Ireland face Iceland in play-offs

Northern Ireland will take on Iceland in a UEFA Women’s Nations League promotion/relegation play-off this autumn.

Tanya Oxtoby’s side are set to battle it out with Iceland for a place in League A in the next edition of the competition.

The draw for play-off ties involving teams finishing third in League A groups and teams finishing second in League B groups was made at UEFA HQ today.

Northern Ireland secured a promotion/relegation play-off by finishing second in their League B group in the current UWNL edition. Iceland finished third in their League A group behind France and Norway, while Switzerland finished bottom of their group.

The two play-off games are scheduled to be played on 24 and 28 October, with the first leg being staged in Northern Ireland.

The winner of the tie will play in League A for the European Qualifiers phase for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, while the defeated team will play in League B.

Northern Ireland’s campaign in the current edition of the competition saw them win two, draw two and lose two in League B Group 1. Their only defeats came against Women’s Euros-bound table toppers Poland, who were automatically promoted to League A.

The 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica on Tuesday was a crucial result. It ensured eight points was enough to secure second place for Northern Ireland ahead of the Bosnians on five points. Romania finished bottom with four points.
