S4C to broadcast Wrexham-Swansea clash

The Genero Adran Premier fixture between Wrexham and Swansea City on Sunday 17th September has been selected for live Sgorio television coverage by S4C.

The game, which will be played at The Rock in Cefn Mawr, will complete the opening weekend of the 2023-24 Genero Adran Premier campaign as kick off has been moved to 5.45pm.

It will be Wrexham’s debut outing in the Genero Adran Premier following promotion from the Genero Adran North last season. Steve Dale’s side won all 12 of their league matches before beating Briton Ferry Llansawel in the play-off.

Visitors Swansea City have won the joint-most titles (six) in the history of the women’s top flight in Wales, including three of the last four. Last season, Ceri Phillips’ side finished second to Cardiff City Women.

Both clubs have moved to a semi-professional model over the summer, handing contracts to members of their squad as the league’s standards continue to increase.

The live game on the opening weekend of the season comes as S4C has pledged to more than double its number of live broadcasts of women’s football this season from the Genero Adran Premier, Genero Adran Trophy and Bute Energy Welsh Cup.

Ianthe Mumford, Genero Adran Premier General Manager, told the league’s website: “The partnership between the Genero Adran Premier and S4C has grown year on year and it’s fantastic that together more live domestic women’s football than ever before will be available to fans.

“Last season we had record-breaking audiences both attending matches and watching via Sgorio and the support from our national broadcaster is crucial to growing the game, showcasing the best of our national competitions and inspiring the next generation.

“It’s great that Wrexham v Swansea will be shown live on S4C as the new season kicks off, meaning that fans at the ground and at home alike can be part of this special occasion for both teams.”

Lowri Roberts, FAW Head of Women’s and Girls' Football, added: “In order to create an equal game, everyone must be able to see the women's game visibly on our screens, and that young girls can see themselves in the game.

"S4C's commitment to show more games this year is going to help us grow the game across the country. And with several clubs in the Genero Adran Premier moving to being semi-pro, the standard will continue to improve every year. What an exciting game to start!”

Geraint Evans, S4C's Director of Content and Publishing Strategy, said: “We are very proud to give more attention to women's football on S4C. The interest in the game is growing, the standard is rising, and we have a duty to give the players a proper platform.

“Hand in hand with the highlights of Wales' international women's matches, we hope that S4C will be able to inspire even more women to play and follow football.”
