Scottish Women’s Premier League


Rangers started their defence of the Sky Sports Cup with a comfortable victory against SWPL 2 side St Johnstone at Ibrox.


Laura Berry netted five of the goals with Kim Shin-Ji and Mia McAuley each contributing doubles, while Jodi McLeary, May Cruft and Katie Wilkinson also getting on the scoresheet.


Glasgow City continued their fine start to the season by booking their place in the quarter finals with a 5-0 victory away to Hamilton Academical. Lisa Forrest put them in front on the stroke of half time and after the break, Sofia Maatta bagged a brace and further strikes came from Mebae Tanaka and Nikol Kozlova.


Celtic travelled to SWPL 2 high fliers Spartans and safely negotiated the trip with a 3-1 win. Grace Courter and Amy Gallacher put them two ahead in the first half, with Izzy Young reducing the arrears just before the interval. Saoirse Noonan restored the two-goal advantage on the hour to take the Hoops into the last eight.


One of the other ties between two top flight teams went emphatically the way of Hibernian, who scored nine times without reply past Motherwell. Eight different players got on the scoresheet for Hibs, Kathleen McGovern netted

a double and the others came from Tegan Bowie, Tiree Burchill, Siobhan Hunter, Linzi Taylor, Rosie Livingstone, Kirsty

Morrison and Eilidh Adams.


Hearts were another team to enjoy a smooth passage, running out 7-0 winners over Montrose. Carly Johns and Georgia Hunter both scored twice and there was one apiece from Georgia Timms, Kayla Jardine and Jenna Slattery.


Queen’s Park will carry the flag for SWPL 2 as the only remaining team in the last eight, which they reached with a 3-1 success away to Gartcairn Women. The first half was goalless but within a minute of the restart, Ellie Kane had put the Spiders in front. Gartcairn responded swiftly with an equaliser from the penalty spot by Morgan Anderson but Queen’s Park went on to take the spoils as Summer Thomson restored their lead and Kane sealed the win with her second late on.


Aberdeen faced a tricky tie against SWPL 2 leaders Kilmarnock but safely made it through with a 3-1 victory. Aimee Black opened the scoring for Aberdeen early in the second half and after Kelsy Crainie had brough Killie level, Hannah Stewart and Kerry Beattie ensured victory for the Dons.


Partick Thistle’s quest to reach a second Final in three years got off to a good start when they defeated Livingston

 7-0. Lia Tweedie led the scoring with a hat-trick, Rachel Donaldson weighed in with a double and there was one

apiece from Jo Love and Mae English.
