Scottish Women’s Premier League

Hearts have been crowned Scottish Women's Premier League champions for the first time in their history, despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Edinburgh rivals and previous title winners Hibernian on the final day of the season.

Eva Olid’s side needed only to avoid defeat at Meadowbank Stadium to secure the title, but a heavy defeat for runners-up Rangers against Glasgow City ensured the Jambos finished two points clear of both sides at the top.

The victory marks a first trophy for Hearts boss Olid in what was her final match in charge, with the Spaniard set to depart the club this summer.

Hearts started brightly, with Georgia Timms going close from a narrow angle in the opening minutes. However, Hibernian took the lead from the penalty spot through Eilidh Adams after Danique Ypema was penalised for barging over Rosie Livingstone. Carly Girasoli then slid a Tegan Bowie cross into her own net to make it 2-0 before half time. After the break, Carly Johns and Jessica Husband both failed to beat Hibs goalkeeper Noa Schumacher as Hearts were unable to mount a comeback on the day, but celebrations started on the final whistle.

At Petershill Park, Rangers were already three goals down to a rampant Glasgow City by half time and ultimately fell to a 6-0 defeat. Lana Golob opened the scoring on 10 minutes, before Hayley Lauder’s volley and a Lisa Forrest header made it 3-0 at the interval.

Forrest added her second from a corner early in the second half, Emily Whelan struck a fine effort from

the edge of the box, and Forrest completed her hat-trick with a glancing header to round off a dominant display from Leanne Ross’ side, who made a spectacular return to form after a difficult few weeks.

The title therefore remains in the Scottish capital, passing from Hibernian – who were champions last season – to Hearts, who have enjoyed a remarkable rise since earning promotion to the top flight in 2019. Incredibly, Hearts are the fifth different club in five seasons to land the SWPL title - a somewhat remarkable record for the league.

Elsewhere, Celtic warmed up for their ScottishGas Women’s Scottish Cup final against holders Rangers this week with a 1-1 draw against Partick Thistle. Saoirse Noonan gave Grant Scott’s side an early lead, but Imogen Longcake equalised for Thistle before half time. Neither side could find a winner in the second period, leaving both with a point on the final day of SWPL action and they finish fifth and sixth respectively.

SWPL 2

Queen’s Park will take on Aberdeen in this week’s SWPL play-off match after they defeated Kilmarnock 1-0 in their eliminator on Sunday. Having beaten Boroughmuir Thistle 1-0 on Wednesday night to reach this stage, the Spiders came up against Killie who narrowly missed out on the title on the final day and have finished runners-up in each of the past three seasons.

Neither team could be separated in normal time but, just two minutes into extra time, substitute Rosie McQuillan gave Queen’s Park the lead with a neat finish following good work by Sophie Rutherford. Kilmarnock could not find a way back into the game and the Spiders now have one more opportunity to reclaim their SWPL 1 status which they lost following relegation 12 months ago.

The SWPL Play-Off Final between Aberdeen and Queen’s Park will take place on Friday 29th May, with a kick off time of 7.35pm. The match will take place at the Albert Bartlett Stadium, Airdrie and will be broadcast live on BBC Alba.

In the meantime, the SWPL 2 Play-Off Final between East Fife and Falkirk will take place on Thursday 28th May, also at Airdrie, with a kick off time of 7.30pm,
