Sophie seals Stingers’ joy

Cheadle Town Stingers claimed their first national title, the FAWNL Plate with a penalty shootout win over Moneyfields at Slough Town FC's Arbour Park after a goalless draw which was highly competitive and evenly balanced.

Two successful grassroots clubs with passionate support on the day made for a great occasion settled by a hat-trick of penalty saves by Stingers keeper Sophie Donald.

Each team had periods of dominance with Cheadle impressing in the first half and Moneys getting stronger late in the contest. Stingers were very close to a 24th minute lead when Jess Gillin's powerful shot was tipped onto the bar by Mia King and Anya McCready’s follow up effort hit the post.

It took 45 minutes for Moneyfields to draw a save from Donald, parrying a Shannon Albuery snap shot but Stingers' strong defence was put under great pressure as the second half unfolded. Albuery went close with a header, then Liv Venditto had a shot deflected just wide on 89 minutes.

The tension mounted in extra time as both keepers pulled off fine saves and then Natasha Shepley kept Stingers alive with a dramatic clearance off the line on 118 minutes to deny Moneyfields a late decider.

Donald dived to her right and got a strong hand on the ball for all three Moneys shootout efforts whilst Stingers converted theirs in style for the win.

While the keeper rightly took the plaudits, this was truly a team effort by the Greater Manchester club with good defence and lively attacking play. Moneyfields could easily have triumphed as well and will now look to end the season on a high with promotion in their sights.
