Manchester City’s bid for a first Barclays Women’s Super League title since 2016 suffered a major with a 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion.
City went ahead through Kerolin after just five minutes and created several clear chances to extend their lead. However, Madison Haley levelled in first half stoppage time, and Kiko Seike put Brighton in front two minutes after the restart. Haley added her second with 25 minutes remaining, before Khadija Shaw pulled one back late on for City.
The result means City may yet need to win both of their remaining fixtures to keep their title hopes alive, although Arsenal would still need to win all of their remaining five games. It was only Brighton’s second league victory over City in 15 attempts.
Sam Kerr scored twice to equal Fran Kirby’s club record as Chelsea took a significant step towards Champions League qualification with a 4-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park. Kerr opened the scoring early, but Yuka Momiki equalised with a stunning 35-yard strike for the hosts. Kerr restored Chelsea’s lead shortly after half time, before Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert added further goals. The result moves Chelsea four points clear of third placed Manchester United, with Arsenal a point further back having played fewer games. Chelsea can still catch Manchester City’s current points total but, due to a vastly inferior goal difference, another title would be virtually impossible.
Manchester United’s Champions League hopes were damaged as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs dominated possession and created the majority of the chances but were unable to find a breakthrough against a resilient United defence. Ella Toone made her return from injury off the bench for United, who have now won just once in their last eight league games. The result leaves them four points behind Chelsea, with two games left to play. although fourth placed Arsenal have three games in hand on them.
London City Lionesses ended a five-game winless run in style with a 5-1 victory over bottom placed Leicester City. Shannon O’Brien gave Leicester a surprise lead, but Lucia Corrales quickly equalised. Isobel Goodwin, Malou Marcetto, Grace Geyoro and Freya Godfrey completed the rout. The result lifts London City to seventh, while Leicester remain four points from safety at the foot of the table.
West Ham United took a vital step away from relegation danger with a 1-0 win over Liverpool. Viviane Asseyi’s corner led to an own goal by Cornelia Kapocs after just six minutes, and West Ham held firm despite late pressure from the visitors. The result moves the Hammers one point behind Liverpool and seven points clear of bottom club Leicester.
