Barclays WSL2
The Barclays WSL 2 title race will go to a thrilling finish on the final day of the season as Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City will meet each other with the winning teams being confirmed as Champions.
Should the match finish in a draw, then third placed Crystal Palace would be able to climb above both teams and take the title if they win at home to Portsmouth.
Charlton Athletic reclaimed top spot by a single point following an entertaining 2-2 draw against a spirited Southampton side at the weekend. The match burst into life in the latter stages. Sophie Whitehouse produced a crucial early save to deny Megan Collett, before Jess Simpson gave Southampton a 26th minute lead. Ellie Kenney equalised for the Addicks after a goalmouth scramble, before Charlotte Newsham’s late penalty appeared to have secured all three points. However, Atlanta Primus levelled immediately for the visitors when Sophie Whitehouse’s save rebounded off the bar and fell kindly at her feet. Charlton had controlled much of the second half and struck the woodwork in stoppage time, but had to settle for a point in a highly dramatic finish.
Previous leaders Birmingham City suffered a shock 3-0 defeat in their final home game of the season as Ipswich Town claimed all three points with a dominant first half display. Kit Graham opened the scoring inside six minutes with a long range strike and she added a second before the break. Princess Ademiluyi headed home from a corner to make it 3-0 by the 15th minute. Birmingham improved after the interval and created several chances, but were denied by resolute Ipswich defending. The result guarantees Ipswich’s place in the division for next season whilst the Blues now turn their attention to their decisive final day trip to Charlton.
Crystal Palace confirmed at least a promotion play-off place with a 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Annabel Blanchard marked her 100th appearance for Palace with the opening goal, before Ashleigh Weerden tapped home a second on 31 minutes. Katy Watson pulled one back for Sunderland shortly after half time, but Palace held firm to move level with Birmingham and a point behind Charlton.
Jessie Gale struck in the ninth minute of injury time as Bristol City secured a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their final home game of the season. Beth Lumsden gave the visitors an early lead, but Rio Hardy equalised before half time. Gale’s dramatic winner completed the turnaround and lifted City’s spirits at Ashton Gate, lifting them back above Newcastle and into fourth place.
A Georgia Brougham header proved the difference as Nottingham Forest claimed a 1-0 victory at Fratton Park, a result which confirms that Pompey will finish the campaign at the bottom of the table. The Forest captain rose to meet a corner in the 41st minute, with the ball taking a deflection on its way in. Forest withstood heavy second-half pressure from a desperate Portsmouth side fighting for survival, with substitute Freya Thomas seeing two late efforts cleared off the line. The win keeps Forest in seventh but with the possibility of finishing as high as fifth on the final day.
Durham Women boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Maiden Castle. Mariana Speckmaier opened the scoring with a powerful low strike, before Dee Bradley headed home a Beth Hepple corner to make it 2-0. Sheffield United converted a late penalty through Amy Andrews, but Durham held on for a vital three points in front of their supporters.
