Wales drew 0-0 with former World Champions Germany to conclude their UEFA Nations League campaign.

With relegation to League B already confirmed, Gemma Grainger’s side had nothing to lose in their final group match at Swansea.com stadium but were looking to avoid a sixth straight defeat against a German side which was already confirmed as group winners.

Wales got off on the front foot in the opening half. Rachel Rowe looked to put them ahead early on when Sophie Ingle put her through on goal, she struck hard and low and her effort ricocheted off the post before deflecting off Merle Frohms for a corner.

Jule Brand provided a rather quiet German side with their first chance when she flew through to the area, delivering a shot which drifted past the front of the goal. Not only did Wales prove a threat up front but defended well, with Gemma Evans executing several crucial tackles throughout the night.

After the break, the Germans cranked it up a notch in their efforts to push ahead and secure a goal. Olivia Clark stepped up again to tip over Elisa Senß’s effort from the edge of the box and keep her side on level terms.

Wales looked eager for a win in the game and made a double substitution with Ceri Holland and Ella Powell entering the pitch. Holland was quick to make an impact with a shot that drifted over the bar following a strong counter-attack.

Germany struggled to create chances throughout the match and waited until the final minutes to pile the pressure on. Grainger’s side remained strong throughout, with last ditch defending from Kayleigh Green, RhIannon Roberts and Ingle to see out the game and take home their first point of the campaign.

Despite relegation already decided, tonight provided a positive note to end the year on and a glimpse of what’s to come from Wales in 2024 as they look to qualifying for the UEFA EURO 2025 Finals.
