Whelan signs new Glasgow City contract

Glasgow City  are delighted to announce that Irish forward Emily Whelan has signed a new long term deal with the club.

A full international who has been capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland, Emily signed for Glasgow City ahead of the 2022-23 season from Birmingham City and has since made 89 appearances, scoring on 32 occasions.

The 22-year-old attacker was also part of the City squad that secured the title on the final day of the 2022-23 season, her debut campaign with the club.

A popular figure within the club and with fans, she has become a key member of Leanne Ross' squad and will remain with The Original Trailblazers until the summer of 2028.

Speaking about signing her contract extension Emily had the following to say: “I'm very excited to be staying at City. I have developed a lot both as a player and as a person and I'm keen to continue to do that at the best place for me.

“I love Glasgow. I like where I live and the people are very similar to those back in Ireland. I have family here too, so it really does feel like home.

“The club means a lot to me. It has values that align a lot with mine. It's somewhere I come into everyday and I know I'm going to learn, and I know I'm going to develop.

“That's thanks to what Leanne [Ross] and all the staff do and also to the players I get to share a dressing room with. It really does feel like a family.”

Head Coach Leanne Ross was pleased to secure Emily both for her impact on the pitch and her personality off of it: “Emily is a fantastic person to have at the club. She has an infectious personality that welcomes people into our world with kindness and positivity.

“She has made a huge impact both with the goals that she has scored and the contributions she makes to her team mates. A player who works hard day in, day out.

“We've got aspirations for her to kick on even further and I'm looking forward to working with her for the years to come.”
