Worthing move on up
Southampton Women 0 Worthing 2
Worthing took the points on a stormy afternoon away to Southampton Women with a goal in each half to consolidate fourth place in FAWNL Division One South West.
The home team, still searching for their first league win of the season, fought hard to stay in the game right until the final moments, but a second goal on 89 minutes ensured that the wait goes on for the Sirens.
A strong gusty wind and continual rainfall made conditions unpleasant but both teams gave full on commitment throughout. Southampton sought to contain the visitors with disciplined defence but were undone on 11 minutes by a Lauren Amarena run and cross from the left. Tierney Scott at the far post set up Megan Curran to finish past Maddie Noakes.
The Worthing pressure was pretty constant during the rest of the half but Kaitlyn Cousens and the other Siren defenders were resolute in their work to limit clear cut chances to a minimum.
Southampton had occasional moments of their own with Elle Elkins having a shot blocked and a header saved but it was Noakes who ensured the deficit remained at one with a save from Scott's powerful drive on 43 minutes.
With the wind still making long passes difficult to judge, both sides commendably sought to play constructively on the floor but both defences were well organised and chances at a premium after the break. Noakes did well to hold a low Scott effort on 70 minutes but it was the hosts who then went close to a late equaliser.
A Sirens break down the right saw a low cross pass through the six yard box with Laura Vokes close to turning the ball home then a free kick bobbled around the Worthing area before keeper Lauren Dolbear captured the ball.
The outcome was finally settled when Izzy Franklin picked out Scott free on the edge of the area and she rolled home the decisive goal past Noakes.
Worthing thus completed a quickfire double over Southampton Women, having won the first encounter 3-
