Worthing victorious in title battle
In John Donoghue and Kelly Newton's second season in charge of Worthing FC Women as manager and head coach respectively, the side made it a historic campaign by winning the London & South East League Premier Division title and promotion to Division One South East of the FA Women’s National League.
Worthing’s exploits were not just confined to the league though, reaching the Second Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the team’s history before unfortunately missing out of a place in the Third Round due to two late goals from Milton Keynes Dons.
In other cup competitions, Worthing came out as League Cup winners, overcoming holders Dartford with a 3-
In the league, they nearly went unbeaten with only one loss in the entire season and with a single draw, only dropped five points in total and finishing the league on 61 out of a possible 66 points. Despite this superb record, they did not actually secure the league title until their last match of the season, when they beat AFC Acorns 2-
Gemma Worsfold led the side as captain, her first with the armband, whilst Chloe Winchester came out as top scorer in all competitions with a total of 19 goals. In terms of people playing an important part, you cannot single out any individual and the players played such an important role within the team to enable the side to achieve what it has this season.
All staff as well manager John Donoghue and Kelly Newton (Head Coach) played their part, they were Radd Reynolds (Goalkeeping Coach), Hannah Hewlett (Assistant Coach), Fraser Morrison (Media Officer and Assistant Coach) and Maisie (Physio).
