Wycombe are Champions after rivals draw

Winchester City Flyers 2 AFC Portchester 2

Wycombe Wanderers secured the Southern Region Premier Division title without kicking a ball as the two teams who could potentially have overtaken them fought out an epic 2-2 draw.

Winchester City Flyers and AFC Portchester could not be separated after a dramatic 90 minutes of fierce competition and now cannot overtake the Chairgirls.

Portchester threatened first, Becki Bath forcing a fine save from Ellie Parker to tip over a 25-yard strike but it was the home team who opened the scoring on 12 minutes. Charlie Snelling played a perfectly weighted through pass for top scorer Chelsie Hay to convert past the advancing Shannon Betteridge.

Portchester dominated the game for much of the remainder of the first half but were denied by a strong Flyers defence. There was always a Flyers head or foot to clear danger and Portchy were most dangerous from their excellent set piece deliveries.

The equaliser came shortly after the restart from a Kim Fuller free kick, headed home by Bath at the far post. Portchester looked dangerous at this stage and Gemma Hillier drew another fine Parker save as a superb passing move left her through on goal. Later on, the same player hit the bar from the edge of the area as Portchester pressed.

Flyers battled back in the final fifteen minutes and created some great chances of their own drawing two good saves by Betteridge. However, it seemed that the visitors had grabbed the vital win as Sarah Butterworth turned the ball after a scramble following a corner on 86 minutes.

Flyers were not to be beaten however as Annie Northwood levelled on 90 minutes from Emma Whitlock's delivery. Additional time proved as tense as the rest of the contest, Portchester pouring forward with further heroics from Parker to deny Bath and the final whistle bringing deflation to both camps.

Wycombe are therefore promoted to the FAWNL and had led the table for nearly the whole season. The two chasing clubs have both had very good campaigns in multiple competitions and are a credit to the Southern Region League they will be competing in next season
