Woking FC Women 3 Ascot United 3

(Ascot won 3-1 on penalties)

Woking and Ascot United reprised their Southern Region League Cup first round rivalry with another well fought encounter at Woking College.

The original match was ruled null and void owing to extra time having been played rather than going directly to a penalty shoot out at 90 minutes. Once again the sides could not be separated in normal time but the Yellawomen were perfect from the spot to clinch a place in the second round.

Ascot made a fine start and were two goals to the good inside 15 minutes. Dominique Carrington was sent clear by Laura Moss and her angled shot hit the bar before Alix Todd turned in the rebound.

Kate Fox added the second, powering in a shot from the edge of the area after winning the ball high up the pitch and Ascot were in control.

It took half an hour for the hosts to find their attacking feet and Sheena Nichol halved the deficit with a cross shot from the right. Woking had a good spell of pressure but were grateful for a fine save by Amy Jenkins from Carrington to keep them in touch at the break.

Skipper Kaitlin Howard nearly levelled things up before Charlotte Keenan scored Woking's second just before the hour. Gracie Price played in Helen Ogle, whose shot was well saved by Roz Markham, but Keenan was perfectly placed to turn the ball in.

Back came Ascot, Carrington hitting the bar before Amelia Kimble set up Philippa Holden for a fine low finish on 82 minutes.

Woking had one more piece of magic up their sleeve. Nichol has often scored spectacular goals from distance and her 90th minute 30-yard free kick was right out of the top drawer to earn the spot kick decider.

Unfortunately for the hosts, who had matched their higher tier visitors over two highly competitive ties, three penalties were missed whilst Ascot were spot on to settle the outcome in their favour after an enjoyable contest.
