Arsenal out of Champions League
Arsenal’s challenge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League is over for this season after they were beaten 2-0 by VfL Wolfsburg in the second leg of their quarter final tie.
The teams went into the match level at 1-1 from the previous match but Arsenal found themselves up against it after nine minutes when they went a goal behind, with former Gunner striker Jill Roord giving Wolfsburg the lead. Arsenal tried to rally and get themselves back in the game but after a good spell in the second half, an own goal from the unfortunate Leah Williamson left them with too much to do and their hopes of reaching a first semi final in nine years were brought to an end.
Wolfsburg will now play holders Barcelona who defeated Real Madrid 5-2 in front of an astonishing attendance of 91,500 at the Nou Camp.
The other semi final will be an all-French affair with Paris Saint-Germain, who got past Bayern Munich 4-3 on aggregate after extra time, taking on Olympique Lyonnais who overturned a first leg deficit to beat Juventus 3-1 in the return match.
