Dominant Saints march on

Southampton 5 Reading FC Women 0

Southampton kept up with the pace at the top of the Barclays Women's Championship, putting in a five-star performance to record their biggest ever win at this level, a 5-0 victory over Reading FC Women in front of an attendance of 2,731 at St Mary's.

Dominating the ball throughout, Saints added to their tally at regular intervals over the first 70 minutes with doubles from Katy Wilkinson and Sophia Pharoah and one from Ella Morris.

Saints had already gone close before Wilkinson's headed opener on 17 minutes, directing a Megan Collett cross wide of keeper Emily Orman. The second was arguably the pick of the bunch with fluent interpassing freeing Wilkinson who backheeled perfectly to set up Morris to fire home on 27 minutes.

The third came eight minutes later via another Wilkinson header from another inviting cross which found her unmarked six yards out.

Reading had managed the odd spell of pressure on the Saints goal but with no end product to test Kayla Rendell in the home goal.

The second half was more of the same with Southampton's ability to build at pace and take the ball under pressure making their attacks effective and bringing many players into promising attacking areas.

Both second half goals from Pharoah came via close range finishes after sheer weight of pressure pinned the Royals close to their goal.

Southampton thus remain just a point behind leaders Sunderland, with four clubs vying for a single promotion spot. Reading remain just above the relegation places but with games in hand on their rivals.
