Surprises in Bute Energy Welsh Cup

Four clubs from the second tier were knocked out by lower division opposition in Qualifying Round Two of the Bute Energy Welsh Cup on Sunday.

Kirstie Kural scored a hat-trick as third tier Wrexham Foresters came from behind to win 4-2 at home over Genero Adran North side Felinheli.

Felinheli twice led in the first half courtesy of goals from Anna Jones and Jenna Tugwell-Allsup, but Kural equalised on both occasions to make it 2-2 at half time. 17-year-old Savannah Miller then gave Foresters the advantage for the first time in the 85th minute, before Kural completed her hat-trick in stoppage time.

Third tier Llangefni Town also caused an upset as they triumphed 1-0 away at last season’s Genero Adran North runners-up Llanfair United. The decisive goal came just after the hour mark as Amber Brown found the net for Llangefni, while Llanfair’s afternoon got worse in stoppage time when Millie Evans was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Berriew were the final Genero Adran North side to fall to third tier opposition as they lost on penalties at home to Llanystumdwy following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. The tie went the distance after Annest Roberts’ opener for Llanystumdwy was cancelled out by Samantha Jones’ penalty. The shootout sat at 7-7 after nine penalties each, with Leonie O’Hara then scoring for Llanystumdwy before Sara Lacey saved Bronwyn North’s effort to send the visitors through.

In the south, Cascade YC were beaten 3-1 away by third tier Trefelin – who feature former cup winners Alicia Powe, Emma Beynon, Sarah Adams and Kelly Adams in their ranks. Lauren Armor and Lianne Beynon scored to earn a two-goal lead for Trefelin after 33 minutes and while Megan Waite halved the deficit in first half stoppage time, Jess Curran sealed victory for the hosts midway through the second period.

Fourth tier Llantwit Fardre secured their spot in Round One with a 6-3 win at home against third tier Penydarren. 19-year-old Evie Henshaw scored a first half hat-trick at Tonteg Park, while Ella Howells and Millie Davies also found the net as the hosts earned a 5-1 lead by the hour mark. Brooke Fisher added a sixth goal late on, leaving strikes from Leah Williams and Kate Allen as only consolations for Penydarren.

Three-time Bute Energy Welsh Cup winners Cardiff Met Women earned the biggest victory in Qualifying Round Two as they triumphed 21-0 over Ystradgynlais at Cyncoed. Esme Kilburn-Thompson and Millie Lewis both bagged four goals in the rout, while Summer Kilby, Megan Gladwyn each scored a hat-trick. There was a brace for substitute Molly Chapman, while Rachel Isaac, Casey Brant, Faith Mulenga and Rebecca Storey all found the net once alongside an own goal from Ystradgynlais’ Llinos Davies.

Llandudno came from behind to win 2-1 at home against fellow Genero Adran North side Connah’s Quay Nomads. The Nomads led at half time thanks to Hannah Slack’s 29th minute goal, but Llandudno turned the tie around after the break as Maddie Williams and Jasmin Dutton found the net – avenging the Seasiders’ defeat to the Nomads in this competition last season.
