Scottish Women’s Premier League
Katie Wilkinson's stunning 30-yard lob earned Rangers a 2-1 comeback victory over Glasgow City and stretched their lead at the top of the Scottish Women's Premier League to five points.
City had taken a somewhat surprise lead just after the half-hour mark following a mazy run from Emily Whelan, whose thumping drive was parried by Shu Ohba, leaving Kelly Brady to fire into the roof of the net from close range. City grew into the game and began to exert control, but ten minutes after the break, Lee Gibson let Eilidh Austin's low cross bounce off her chest, and Laura Berry prodded into the unguarded net. Nine minutes later, Gibson was caught out again, stranded well off her line, and Wilkinson spotted the opportunity to loft a superb effort over the Scotland goalkeeper's head. Rangers, who have now won all nine league games, sit five points clear of reigning champions Hearts, while City languish a further four behind. The defeat almost certainly ends the 16-time record winners' title hopes for another season.
Reigning champions Heart of Midlothian twice came from behind to beat Celtic 4-2 and move above their hosts into second place. Celtic got off to the ideal start, Maria McAneny turning home a Casey Howe corner after only three minutes. Ellen Dolan levelled with a long-range strike just after the half-hour, before McAneny headed her second four minutes later. But Hearts responded again two minutes on, Carly Johns converting from the penalty spot. Dolan volleyed home her second five minutes after the break, and Mariana Speckmaier scored what proved to be the decisive final goal shortly after the hour mark. Hearts remain five points behind Rangers, while Celtic are now six adrift of their city rivals in third.
Two second half goals secured Hibernian victory away to Spartans in their Edinburgh derby. It was all square until the 58th minute, when Scarlett Heron's initial attempt was headed in from close range by Aoife Colvill. Defender Heron then secured the points with three minutes remaining, striking from 15 yards. The victory lifts Hibernian to within a point of fourth placed Glasgow City, while Spartans remain seventh, now only ahead of Motherwell on goal difference.
A penalty midway through the second half salvaged a 1-1 draw for Partick Thistle away to Motherwell. Lucy Ronald headed the hosts ahead from close range after 17 minutes, but Thistle levelled on 64 minutes when Sienna McGoldrick was fouled and Rachel Donaldson slotted the equaliser. The draw puts Motherwell a point ahead of Montrose in third bottom spot, with Thistle a point ahead of Spartans in sixth.
Montrose made it two wins on the trot when beating Aberdeen 2-0, a result that leaves the visitors six points adrift at the bottom of the table. Salvetti cleared the ball off the line with her hand, and Kaela McDonald-Nguah stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. It took Montrose until 15 minutes before full-time to secure the points, Demi Taylor setting up Louise Brown to tap home. Montrose remain second bottom despite a second consecutive victory, one point behind Motherwell, while Aberdeen are still to get off the mark this season.
