Chelsea secured their place in Friday's UEFA Women's Champions League league phase draw after a composed 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Estadio Zubieta, completing a 6-2 aggregate triumph.

On a sweltering evening in San Sebastian, the Blues arrived with a commanding three-goal cushion from the first leg and set about managing the tie with discipline and control. The opening period was a tightly contested affair, with the hosts once again demonstrating their defensive organisation, but Chelsea dominated possession without forcing the issue.

James and Carpenter combined again moments later to pick out Keira Walsh, but her shot drifted comfortably into the goalkeeper's arms.

At the other end, Ava Seelenfreund briefly threatened to break through, but Naomi Girma produced a perfectly timed recovery tackle to snuff out the danger. Carpenter continued to cause problems down the right, forcing a sharp save from the goalkeeper just before the half hour mark but the first half was to end goalless, tightening Chelsea’s grip on the tie.

After the restart, Chelsea emerged with greater attacking intent. Beever-Jones drew a fine save from Julia Arrula, and Walsh was on hand to fire home after the corner had been half cleared to give Chelsea the goal they desired. That strike effectively killed the contest, though Sociedad refused to fade quietly. Ainhoa Marin, who had scored in the first leg, came close to pulling one back, while Buchanan was forced into a crucial interception inside the box and Girma headed clear from a succession of corners.

This was not a vintage Chelsea performance, but it was a thoroughly professional one. With the tie effectively won in the first leg, the Blues managed the occasion extremely well, keeping Sociedad at arm's length while ensuring no unnecessary risks were taken. The Spanish side remained competitive throughout and made life difficult, but Chelsea's defensive solidity – led by the excellent Girma – ensured there would be no comeback.

The result confirms Chelsea's place in Friday's draw for the league phase, where they will discover their group stage opponents as the tournament progresses.
