Wales U23 training camp to take place in October

The Football Association of Wales is looking to bridge the gap between WU19 and Senior National Team football, with the announcement of an Under-23s training camp in October.

Work has been ongoing behind the scenes for several years to introduce a WU23s side to the player pathway, with several European nations starting WU23 age group sides despite the lack of an official UEFA WU23s competition.

The introduction of the age group will also support Cymru’s Talent ID programme, which looks to identify new future talent both in Wales and outside of Wales, whether through birth or heritage.

Under-19s Head Coach Nia Davies will lead the camp in October which will take place at the FAW HQ in Hensol. The WU23s will overlap with the National Team camp to allow close collaboration between players and staff of both sides.

The FAW’s Chief Football Officer Dr. David Adams says; “Our goal is to graduate two players per year into the Women’s National team in order to bridge the significant gap between WU19 and Seniors and recognise talent across the system, targeting specific windows to track players will have significant benefits.

“The WU23s camp will ensure that several high potential players across the pathway benefit from further monitoring and international exposure to aid their future development.”

Following the international window, a review will take place to explore future opportunities for the WU23s setup.
